CENTRE Pete Burnell helped himself to a hat-trick of tries as Southam bounced back to winning ways and progressed into the third round of the EDF Energy Junior Vase on Saturday. Slow-starting Southam were clearly second best during the opening quarter but gradually warmed to the task with some good forward play resulting in quick ball which the backs used to telling effect as Burnell burst through to open the scoring. Shortly after more good work led to fleet-footed winger Pete Bicknell going over in the corner for a try which Oli Perkins converted to secure a 12-0 half time advantage. Southam were totally in control in the second half as both forwards and backs linked excellently to create an opening for Bicknell who touched down straight from the restart. Tries followed at regular intervals with scrum half Rob Pelter adding to a couple from Burnell, while Perkins completed the haul by slotting over one conversion.. Southam relaxed their grip in the final ten minutes which allowed the well beaten visitors to claim a late converted try but it was merely a consolation effort. • Southam 2nds defeated Manor Park 35-12 to a game which was reduced to passive scrums after the visitors arrived without two front row players. Try scorers were Bruce Childs 2, Mark Williams, James Whigham and Jim Frogley with Mark Harvey kicking five conversions, three of which were drop goals. • The 3rds, inspired by Dave King and Richard Benbow, overcame AEI Rugby 24-12. Tries here for Liam Munroe 3 and skipper Tim Gray with Matthew Crowther adding two conversions. |
