Saturday November 11th
1st XV:  Upton-on-Severn 9 - Southam 7

LACKLUSTRE Southam slipped to their first Midland West Five (South) defeat of the season at hosts who belied their lowly position on Saturday.  Southam paid the penalty for a poor performance as well as failing to give Upton the respect they deserved.

The visitors started brightly and dominated the set pieces but were slow to react to the mauls and rucks although they did go ahead after ten minutes when centre Pete Burnell burst through to score a good try which Ollie Perkin converted.

Burnell suffered a calf injury shortly afterwards and was replaced by Andy King which seemed to stifle the visitors attacking options.  The direct running of Burnell was sorely missed and Upton reduced the arrears with a penalty just before the interval.

Southam appeared bereft of ideas as Upton came more into the game in the second half.  Good runs by Will Lyne and Charlie Richardson sparked some hope but poor mauling constantly let Southam down.

Another penalty midway through the second half put Upton right back in contention and they snatched victory by slotting over a last minute penalty which followed a mistake by the visiting winger.

Southam 3rds lost 14-8 to Leamington who took the honours with a late try.  The visitors led 7-0 at half time but Southam hit back with a try from Liam Munro to which David Needham added a penalty only to concede the lead in the closing stages.
