Saturday October 14th In the pretty setting Southam played new opponents Bredon Star for the first time. Southam were encouraged to do well as they had the Dinosaurs Club older players out for an away day and its members roared on Southam to a comfortable victory. This was an average game as Southam did not hit top form but the young centres were too good for Bredon causing them trouble all afternoon. Southam’s large pack should have dominated proceedings but were held by a lighter less experienced side. Southam got off to a flying start when a quick ball allowed centre Ollie Perkin to dive over after 5 mins. Perkin then increased the lead with a 30 metre penalty after handling in the ruck by Bredon. With good ball Southam scored again after 20 minutes when centre Pete Burnell took 3 opposition players with him to score under the post. Perkin converted. The forwards then got in on the action when hooker Gareth Andrews crept around the outside of a maul to score. Perkin again kicked a good conversion. Half Time 22 – 0 Southam without hitting top gear were in control but did not hit the distract button as they should have done. The forwards were hitting the ruck and mauls at half pace and not dominating as they can do. Southam increased their lead with a Perkin penalty after 5 mins. Then Pete Burnell scored another try after a break by fly half Don Smith. Perkin converted. Bredon Star then got on the score sheet with a converted try, a blatant knock on was not seen by the ref as the Stars player scored. Don Smith then scored a try after scrum half Rob Pelter made half break to allow Smith room to flash over. Perkin converted. The win was sealed with a try for wing Russell King who scored wide out after full back Roger Killick entered the line to give King the space to score. For Southam centres Pete Burnell and Ollie Perkin were the pick of the backs whilst hookers Gareth Andrews and Charlie Richardson excelled for the forwards.
