Saturday September 30th
1st XV:
Southam 12   -   Stoke Old Boys 3

Southam won their 2nd league fixture but in reality it was a poor game and Southam dropped down a level from last week.  They should have wrapped the game up in the first half.

Southam had a veteran half back Don Smith pairing of Mark Harvey who is returning back to the club after he reassigned to C.A.D. Kineton.  Their combined age of 85 still bellied the years as they both had effective games.  Southam took an early lead when the forwards mauled the backs and flanker Will Lyne crossed over.  Full back Roger Killick kicked an excellent conversion from the touch line.  Southam were solid in the pack but tended to lose the ball in the maul.  On numerous occasions they went into the maul with the ball and came out without it!!  The line out was better this week with the return of hooker Gareth Andrews and Will Lyne’s safe hands made save of good possession.  Southam increased their lead with an excellent team try.  With no8 Dan Batchelor breaking clear to feed centre Pete Burnell who gained ground to allow co-centres Pete Bicknell to score in the corner.

Half Time 12 – 0

Southam seemed content to go through the motions in the 2nd half, but credit to Stoke who’s resolute defence kept Southam at bay.  Twice Pete Burnell broke through only for a final pass to go astray.  Stoke kicked a penalty after 20 mins but never looked a threat.  Southam will need to step up a gear as the leagues start to level out for Southam.  Roger Killick and Pete Burnell were the pick of the backs and lock Mark Constable and flanker Will Lyne were the prominent forwards.

Southam received a new set of shirts before the game from Hill Top Farm Shop & Café from Hunningham  Directors Chris Ellis was on hand to present the shirts to captain Ed Ellis.

2nd XV:  Southam 7   -   Stoke Old Boys 27

Stoke could not provide a front row so passive scrums were order of the day and Southam advantage was lost as Stoke had better backs and used them to good effect.  Fly half Roger Eadon made a guest appearance and scored a try and conversion and generally played well.  Southam lost hooker Tom Henstone with a dislocated shoulder.
