Southam back on the
winning track 1st XV: Southam 15 Alcester 7 SOUTHAM bounced back to winning ways with a hard fought success on Saturday which kept alive their Midland Five West (South) title hopes.
Alcester, with advantage of a slight wind, started briskly and constant
early pressure was rewarded when the scrum half darted over for a tenth
minute converted try. It stung Southam into action and the visiting
forwards began to take charge with flanker
Southam camped in the home 22 and -were eventually rewarded with a penalty
which fly-half Roger Killick slotted over to reduce the arrears to 7-3 at
the interval. Replacement lock Eric Leeson added some useful lineout work to his all round mobility as the visitors stepped up the pace in the second half.
The defence was yet again outstanding with hooker Gareth Andrews
Southam took the lead 15 minutes from time when Leeson crashed over following a rolling maul and the advantage was well protected thanks to some excellent line kicking from Killick which gave the forwards a boost. Bruce Childs and Pete Burnell were introduced to the action with the latter wasted no time in making his mark with a couple of crunching tackles which won possession.
Victory was sealed when No 8 Ed Ellis broke from a scrum on the home 22 and fed Blake Summers who made good ground before slipping the ball to Richardson who touched down under the posts to leave Killick the simplest of conversions.
Southam 2nds triumphed 24-8 at Alcester. Try scorers were Carl Elkington, the impressive Dan Batchelor, Simon Dommitt and Lennon, while Greg Steele kicked two conversions. The 3rds won 22-20 at Banbury. They trailed 20-5 at the interval but hit back with tries by Mark Harvey, Simon Millar, Dave King and captain Ted Mawby with Matt Crowther slotting over a con-version.z |
