Saturday September 23rd Southam ran out comfortable winners in the end but endured a tough opening half from RSA and were behind early on but as the second half showed Southam’s bulkier pack dominated and RSA wilted under the pressure. Southam played with the wind in their favour 1st half but were behind after 98 minutes when RSA winger burst clear to score a try. Southam who were encamped in their own 22 for the first 10 mins started to get into the game. A clean line out take from flanker Ed Ellis fed prop Dan Winfield and his weighty pressxxxx took him over for a try. RSA came back when their speedy full back caught Southam out and crashed past the would be tacklers to score a converted try. Southam rallied and No 8 Dan Batchelor broke from a scrum to feed flanker Jim Frogley who crashed over. Fly half Roger Killick converting. Southam increased their lead just before half time when the Southam pack marched the ball for 20 metres to feed centre Pete Burnell who scored a fine try. Killick converting hit 12 – 19. Southam started the second half in fine style and the forwards began to grind down their opponents. Several takes against the head found RSA going backwards and Southam’s impressive back row began to dominate. Skipper Ed Ellis who was having an outstanding game got on the score sheet when he received a well timed pass from lock Mark Constable to score a try. Killick converting. Southam brought on sub back row Will Lyne for Frogley and his affect was immediate as fellow back rowers Batchelor and Ellis made ground to feed Lyne who brushed aside tackles to score a 25 meter try. Killick again converting. A good start to their league campaign with Ed Ellis outstanding as was Dan Batchelor with young centres Pete Burnell and Pete Bicknell showing good promise. 2nd XV: Southam 29 - St Andrews 10 A good win for the 2nds under Dan Haynes leadership. Young wing Mick Hope scored two tries, fellow winger Pete Russell scored one, full back James Wigham one and Sub ¾ Steve Thomas one. Fly Half Tom Robinson 2 conversions. Mick Hope had a good game and so did James Scruff who slotted in at Prop to make sure passive scrum, did not occur. |
